Tumburu is the epitome of the gandharva force. As both the greatest musician and the greatest warrior, he has mastered the outward expression of love within the physical realm. He shows us how love can be channeled into skill and action.
However, even Tumburu was not beyond error. While living in the city of Kubera, the lord of wealth, he committed a "sin" — an action that was inauthentic to his true nature. As a result, Kubera cursed him to live as a demon for many years until he was eventually released by Lord Rama. This story highlights that even celestial beings have work to do. Gandharvas are not perfect; their successes and failures teach us how to be active in the world with integrity.
Tumburu was cursed because his actions did not spring from his innate self. His lesson is that the process of expressing love is one of continual refinement—of succeeding, failing, and trying again. The "curse" is not a punishment, but a necessary catalyst for learning and returning to one's true path.
